How to apply for our opportunity class
Opportunity classes are one of the ways that the department supports high potential and gifted students. These are students who learn faster and more easily than others.
It is a two-year program from Year 5 to 6. Parents and carers cannot apply for Year 6 placement only.
You can apply even if our school is outside your local enrolment area. Enrolment is by application only. Students must sit the placement test to be offered a place.
We offer an equal number of places for girls and boys. Learn more at Gender parity model
When to apply
Applications are now closed for opportunity class entry in 2027
There is no late application period. If you have a question about your current application, please visit Selective high schools and opportunity classes. You can also send a message to the Selective Education Team in your application dashboard.
Applications usually open in early November (when students are in Year 3) and close in February the next year. You can choose up to 4 schools to apply to.

Our orientation programs
Starting a new school is a big step. We're here to help make the transition a smooth and positive experience for every student and their family.
We have a kindergarten and OC orientation program, which includes information sessions for our new Kindergarten and OC parents towards the end of the year. These events help you and your child feel prepared for starting school. This is a chance to meet our friendly staff, explore our school facilities, foster a sense of belonging and see what makes our school a great place to learn.
Contact us to find out what’s available and how we can support you before your child starts at our school.
"Our boys have both learned many things in their years at Picnic Point Public School. The teachers are hard working and caring with a strong focus on academics. One of the particular strengths of the school, in my experience, is their focus on student independence and high school readiness in stage 3. This really helped my son make the leap to high school in terms of both organisation and academics, without it I think he would have struggled with stepping up to high school." - Guyer Family
